TV - Vernon Reid, DJ Logic, The Yohimbe Brothers. Yohimbe Brothers. Front End Lifter. Though you get the sense that Front End Lifter is simply a good-time side project for free-willed New York artists Vernon Reid and DJ Logic, the resulting album is so staggering you really wish the duo would get together more often. Over the course of 15 relatively brief, incredibly dense, and surprisingly varied compositions, the guitarist and turntablist showcase remarkable creativity, offering much more than the expected - guitar riffing over turntable scratching. Reid and DJ Logic, calling themselves Yohimbe Brothers, released an album in September 2002 entitled Front End Lifter. The Yohimbe Brothers have been touring on and off since the release of the album. Reid was also the music supervisor for the film Mr. 3000, starring Bernie Mac and directed by Charles Stone III the film was released in September 2004. Front End Lifter offers a fresh set of eclectic vibes that will especially please folks who long for a return to progressiveness on the dance floor. The Yohimbe Brothers Reid with DJ Logic playing mind-bendingly tasty turntables a crack team of PLAYAS extraordinaire simply crank out supercharged guitar funk that not only'll get your grandma out on the dancefloor, but will also fry your synapses with acid-drenched guitar shredding and a battery of crazy sounds that all bounce along with the intensity of horny teenager on. It is like Reid and Logic are trying to make modern dance music, and conceptually, there is nothing wrong with this. Since the early Black Rock Coalition days, Vernon Reid and DJ Logic have gotten together to make music when no one was looking. Through collaborating on each other's projects, they got the idea to incorporate as the Yohimbe Brothers. Over the last ten years, they accumulated the material that wound up on their recent album, Front End Lifter. Clearly audible are the influences of Handsome Boy Modeling School, Material, Squarepusher and P-Funk, along with several other traces. I recently sat down with Vernon and Logic before a rehearsal for their Fall tour to get a handle on their assembly process. Guitarist Vernon Reid is describing Front End Lifter, the album that he and DJ Logic né Jason Kibler released a few months back under the band name Yohimbe Brothers. The songs are about entering different vibe spaces, he continues. Some of them have kind of traditional structures, but a lot of them don't. They're just very. Each piece definitely has a thing or a vibe or an image associated with it. Some might expect a summit meeting between a famed guitarist and hotshot turntablist to produce little more than a scratch-and-shred cutting contest. But Front
