Blackjazz is the fifth studio album by the Norwegian band Shining, released through Indie Recordings on 18 January 2010. It marks a shift into the avant-garde metal genre, with extreme metal, industrial and progressive influences. As on Shining's two previous albums, the music draws elements from many different genres. The album's title, Blackjazz, is meant to describe the band's sound. Songs in album Shining Nor - Blackjazz 2010. Shining Nor - The Madness and the Damage Done, Pt. Shining Nor - Fisheye. Shining Nor - Exit Sun, Pt. Shining Nor - HELTER SKELTER. Shining Nor - Blackjazz Deathtrance. Shining Nor - Omen. But Shining manage to transcend their influences, numerous as they may be, by simply throwing themselves into the sum of their parts with such gusto. From beginning to end- and including a predictable but enjoyable cover of King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man that tips their prog influences- Shining never fail to convince themselves, or listeners, they're presenting something new. It's when Blackjazz fails to go whole hog, in fact, that they're at their least convincing. The world certainly doesn't need another Opeth, and Shining still gets a bit carried away with the synth noodling with which symphonic metal has cursed an unlucky world. An astonishing blend of industrial, metal, free jazz, and raw electronic noise, Shining's Blackjazz represents more than a leap forward for the band it's the kind of album artists will be striving to equal for years to come. Comparable to Ministry's The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste, Blackjazz mixes scorched-earth synth-guitar riffs and concussive drumming with the unholy shrieks and post-Coltrane saxophone of group leader Jørgen Munkeby. Shining NOR - Blackjazz review: A work of surreal mindfuckery of absolutely massive proportions, Blackjazz needs to be thoroughly heard over and over in order to be believed and fully understood. A soon-to-be classic album. Review Summary: A work of surreal mindfuckery of absolutely massive proportions, Blackjazz needs to be thoroughly heard over and over in order to be believed and fully understood. To say that Shining have morphed into a whole new different beast with Blackjazz might as well be an understatement considering how much of an stylistic shift this release represents compared to their previous work
