Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them is the second full-length release by Murder by Death. It was released on Eyeball Records in 2003. Its title is a reference to the tagline of the 1974 film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. It is a concept album based around the Devil and a small Mexican border town against which he wages war. On the band's website, Adam Turla, the band's guitarist, lead singer, and principal lyricist explained the meanings of all the songs on the album. The following is his. It is an album about the Devil wiping a small town off the map. It was recorded and mixed in nine days at The Clubhouse up in the Catskill Mountains by Daniel Goodwin. released October 13, 2003. american gothic americana indie rock rock & roll rockabilly Louisville. It comes across as rather odd considering the direction of the story line. All in all, Who Will Survive is a competent album, with quality production and an interesting idea behind the lyrics. Unfortunately, it's the band's inability to take advantage of what should set itself apart that ultimately makes the album seem rather average. I was initially tempted to peg Murder By Death as Nick Cave with Post-Hardcore sensibilities: the fascination with American roots music within the framework of Post-Punk, the Gothic sensibility and focus on lurid and grotesque storytelling are all hallmarks of Nicks style that come through in Murder By Death. But the younger band has a sly, subtle sense of humor and a flair for the cinematic that ol Nick never really showed. But the concept of the album, as eccentric as it might be on paper, belies a lyrical depth drawn from singer Adam Turlas religious studies and a knack for setting stark, Sergio Leone-esque imagery into words.
