Sinfonia Concertante. A few hours of listening to the Haydn recordings of Thomas Fey and the Ensemble La Passione would have set him straight on the issue of restraint, but what you get here are recordings that, as flawlessly as the Berliners may play, are pretty lifeless. Hear the mushy, directionless slow introduction to the first movement of the Symphony No. 91 CD 2, track 1, for example. Rattle's tinkering with the score he has an odd way of making phrases back off dynamically in mid-utterance, robbing Haydn of his robust good cheer largely fails to convince. It is notably the first of his symphonies written after the completion of the six Paris symphonies in 1786. The symphony was completed in 1787, just like his 89th symphony. It is one of Haydn's best-known works, even though it is not one of the Paris or London symphonies and does not have a descriptive nickname. It is sometimes referred to as The Letter. Haydn: Symphonies 88-92. Franz Joseph Haydn. 3 out of 5 stars 20. In short, this disc of Haydn 88, 89 and 92 is one of the great Haydn symphony recordings, AND one of the great Vienna Philharmonic recordings. I am not always an uncritical fan of Karl Böhm but he is often great in his true Fach, that being Strauss and Mozart - and the latter is close enough in style to Papa Haydn to suggest that on a good day Böhm is equal to the challenge, especially when he is directing the VPO at their creamiest, recorded in best 70's.
