Album

This brilliant early recording of Frederic Rzewski unfortunately unavailable on disc as of 2002 showcases the composer emerging from a period in which he was largely involved with free improvisation with the group Musica Elettronica Viva and beginning to investigate more structured writing. Here the burgeoning minimalist movement was a prime musical influence, although on two of the pieces what strikes the listener first and foremost is the political content. Frederik Rzewski - Coming Together - Attica Students Coming Together and Attica, Rzewski celebrates in music the famous revolt of the American prison in 1971. The texts of Sam Melville and Richard X. Clark make pulsating and alive the invocations of the prisoners full of pathos, these fragments of life oscillate between a confessional tone and the hymn to freedom, in a touching emblem of compassion. The fixity of the sound images is incisive, unnerving and melancholic, embroidering a solid minimalist repetition. I-Catalogue Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies 1981, Robert Christgau reviewed Coming TogetherAtticaMoutons de Panurge, an album recorded with vocals by performance artist Steve ben Israel and released in 1973 by Opus One Records. The design of 'Coming Together' is simple, even minimal, Christgau said. Steve ben Israel reads and rereads one of Sam Melville's letters from Attica over a jazzy, repetitious vamp. Yet the result is political art as expressive and accessible as Guernica. for any number of musicians playing melody instruments. any number of nonmusicians playing anything. Musicians: always play loud, never stop or falter, stay together as long as you can, but if you get lost, stay lost. Do not try to find your way back into the fold. Black Sweat Records is reissuing this Opus One release at the end of November 2018. I'm picking up a copy to compare to the original pressing.

While listening to Attica, I'm reading Steve Ben Israel's obituary. I get into his readings and the recorded sound is just so real. As Max would say, Opus One, special records for special people.
