Campfire Songs is the debut and only album by the American band Campfire Songs, released in March 2003. A collaborative work between Dave Portner, Noah Lennox, and Josh Dibb, it was later retroactively classified as the third studio album by experimental pop band Animal Collective. The album comprises five individual songs played back to back and recorded in one take. Although it was the middle of November and thus very cold, the recording was made outside on a screen porch in Maryland, using three. We had had the idea of doing something really warm and inviting-sounding for a while, like three or four years at least. We wanted it to sound like Collective - Campfire Songs 2003. An idea originally thought up by Avey Tare and Panda Bear while in college, Campfire Songs is not a record of songs sung around a campfire but a record that hints at songs emerging from the fire itself: We wanted to give the music the feeling and atmosphere of the outdoors and the warmth of a fire, so people could bring it indoors. Originally recorded in 2001 and released in 2003 under the name Campfire Songs, this eponymously titled album serves as a record of the early experiments in melodic atmospherics by members of what would eventually become the Animal Collective featuring Panda Bear, Avey Tare, and Deakin. Recorded on a screened-in porch in one take on a brisk November day, the album is like the psychedelic folk soundtrack to a camping trip that never happened. Campfire Songs. Released March 2003.
